What a masked Aadhaar is
A masked Aadhaar hides the first eight digits of your number and shows only the last four — so a landlord, a hotel, or a delivery company gets the identity document they asked for without a copy of your full number. UIDAI offers this as a download option itself, and its own regulations describe redacting or blacking out Aadhaar numbers as the correct way to share a document that contains one.

Your document never reaches us
Everything happens inside your browser. We never receive the file, never see your Aadhaar number, and store nothing. Note in particular what this tool deliberately does not do: it doesn't scan for your number, doesn't read the QR code, and doesn't verify anything against UIDAI. Common questions
Can the black bar be removed or "lifted off" later?
No. That's the whole point of the way this is built. The page is re-rendered as an image with the bar drawn into the pixels, and only then saved — so there's no separate rectangle object sitting over still-intact text underneath. This matters: a mask made by drawing a shape on top of a PDF in most editors can be deleted or copied around, and the number underneath comes straight back. Ours genuinely can't.
Why doesn't it find the number for me?
Deliberately. Detecting the number would mean reading and processing it, which is exactly what we've built this tool to avoid — and an automatic detector that misses, or covers the wrong digits, would be far worse than a box you placed yourself and can see is right.
Should I mask the QR code as well?
If you're sharing the copy with someone who has no business reading your full details, yes — the QR code on an e-Aadhaar carries your name, address, date of birth and the full number, and any phone can read it. Masking the printed digits while leaving the QR code intact protects almost nothing.
Is a masked Aadhaar accepted as ID?
In many everyday situations, yes — it's a UIDAI-recognised form of the document. But whether a particular organisation accepts it is up to them, and some (banks doing full KYC, for instance) will need more. Ask before you send it, rather than after.
Is it legal to do this?
Masking your own Aadhaar before sharing it is what UIDAI itself recommends, and its Sharing of Information regulations specifically describe redacting or blacking out Aadhaar numbers as the correct way to handle a document containing one. What you shouldn't do is publish anyone's Aadhaar number publicly, masked or otherwise — including your own. This is general information, not legal advice.
